These casual trousers, which Elemente Clemente makes from skin-friendly and breathable linen, are light and airy. They are dyed by hand using an elaborate dip-dye technique, resulting in a gentle color gradient that is always slightly different, giving each piece an individual character. As the trousers are pre-washed, the slightly transparent fabric has a beautifully soft drape. The linen fibers used by Elemente Clemente come exclusively from Europe and are harvested there using the traditional field retting process. In this process, the cut and scutched stems of the flax plant are laid out in a field. During the retting process, which lasts several weeks, the pectins in the plant stems dissolve naturally with the help of microorganisms, and the solid woody components separate from the fibers. The separated components serve as natural fertilizer for the soil. The long fibers are then extracted through mechanical breaking, beating, and scutching. Field retting is a resource-efficient process that alternatives such as water retting or chemical retting cannot match. This is because these methods require large amounts of water and energy and place an additional burden on the environment with chemicals.
