Plant Protection

Recommended Topics

By May at the latest, often as early as April, you can expect an increase in the number of slugs and snails, which "threaten" the newly sprouting plants in vegetable, perennial or flower beds in particular. Lettuce, dahlias or delphiniums must be protected from being eaten with suitable measures if you don't want to miss out on the harvest or the flowers. Place vegetable and flower beds in an open, sunny spot - preferably not next to compost heaps, hedges or "wild" corners of the garden. Snails find shelter in such places during the day and can then crawl straight into the beds in the evening.

Ground frost at night can be fatal for many plants. Whether in pots, window boxes or flower beds, whether freshly sown, recently planted or already mature plants: a drop in temperature to less than 0 °C above ground level is just as damaging at the start of the winter season as it is in spring. But that doesn't have to be the case: Frost protection fleeces or mats made from breathable materials such as coconut, sheep's wool or jute felt will get your plants safely through the cold season.
