Hornmanufaktur Petz. Horn combs

In 1951, the Austrian horn comb maker Friedrich Petz was the last of his guild to receive the master craftsman's certificate, but his guild was dissolved in the years that followed and comb making was declared a free trade. As a result, and with the increasing number of industrially produced combs made of hard rubber and plastic, the number of horn comb makers steadily decreased. The Hornmanufaktur Petz in Vienna is one of the few that still produces combs, brushes and hair clips from the natural material by hand, this since 1862. The knowledge of manual processing is passed down from generation to generation, today the grandson of said horn comb maker master runs the business and manufactures on the machines of the grandfather.

Don't complain, make it better. Following this action-oriented motto, we developed the following series of Manufactum household brushes together with our brush makers (an industry that is not exactly booming). From the shaping of the brush bodies, the selection of the wood, the trim materials, the trimming technique to the handle spouts and threads, the guiding question was: What can be done better (again)? You can see the result here.
